01Stocks: ownership with a paper trail

A share of stock represents a fractional ownership claim on a company. When you buy Apple stock, you are literally buying a tiny slice of the company's assets, earnings, and voting rights, however small that slice might be. This ownership structure is what separates stocks from most other instruments a new trader will encounter: it is backed by a real, ongoing business with revenue, costs, assets, and liabilities, and its long-run price is at least loosely anchored to that business's performance, even if short-term price action can diverge wildly from fundamentals.

Stocks trade on regulated exchanges such as the NYSE or Nasdaq, with standard trading hours (typically 9:30am to 4:00pm US Eastern time for the regular session, with extended pre-market and after-hours sessions available at lower liquidity). Settlement, meaning the point at which ownership legally transfers and cash changes hands, occurs on a T+1 or T+2 basis depending on jurisdiction, which is largely invisible to a retail trader using a modern broker but matters for institutional and margin accounting. Because stocks represent equity in a company, they carry no expiry date; you can hold a share indefinitely, subject to the company continuing to exist.

For a beginner, the appeal of stocks is straightforward: the concept of ownership is intuitive, information is abundant (earnings reports, analyst coverage, news), and most brokers now offer commission-free trading with the ability to buy fractional shares, lowering the barrier to entry. The tradeoff is that stock-specific leverage, when using a margin account, is typically capped at 2:1 for retail traders under standard regulations, which is much lower leverage than futures or forex, making stocks comparatively capital-intensive to trade at scale.

02Futures: standardised contracts with expiry and leverage

A futures contract is a standardized, exchange-traded agreement to buy or sell a specific quantity of an underlying asset at a predetermined price on a specified future date. Futures exist on an enormous range of underlyings: stock indices (like the E-mini S&P 500), commodities (crude oil, gold, wheat), interest rates, and even cryptocurrencies. Unlike a stock, a futures contract is not ownership of anything; it is a derivative contract whose value is derived from the price of the underlying asset, and it has a finite life, expiring on a set date after which the contract is settled either in cash or physical delivery, depending on the contract specification.

Futures are traded on margin, but the margin here works differently from stock margin: it is a performance bond, a good-faith deposit required by the exchange to hold the position, rather than a loan against the value of purchased securities. This structure allows for substantially higher effective leverage than stocks. For example, one E-mini S&P 500 futures contract might control roughly $250,000 of notional index exposure while requiring an initial margin of only around $12,000-$13,000, depending on the exchange's current requirement, meaning the effective leverage can exceed 15 to 1. This is powerful but dangerous: the same leverage that magnifies gains magnifies losses at exactly the same rate, and futures accounts can and do lose more than the initial deposit if not carefully managed.

Each futures contract has a defined tick size (the minimum price increment it can move) and tick value (the dollar amount that increment represents), which every serious futures trader must memorize before trading, because it directly determines position sizing and risk per trade. Futures also trade nearly 24 hours a day across global sessions for many contracts, which offers flexibility but also means significant price moves can occur while a trader is asleep, a real practical risk that does not exist in the same way for regular-hours stock trading.

03Forex: the world's largest, most decentralised market

The foreign exchange (forex or FX) market is where currencies are traded against each other, quoted in pairs such as EUR/USD or USD/JPY. It is the largest financial market in the world by trading volume, with several trillion dollars changing hands daily, driven by a combination of international trade, central bank policy, cross-border investment, and speculative trading. Unlike stocks and futures, forex has no single centralized exchange; it operates as a decentralized, over-the-counter network of banks, liquidity providers, brokers, and electronic trading platforms operating continuously from Sunday evening to Friday evening (in most time zones), following the sun across major financial centers: Sydney, Tokyo, London, and New York.

Because forex brokers act as intermediaries connecting retail traders to this liquidity pool (rather than a neutral exchange matching all participants equally), the quality of execution, spread, and even the fairness of pricing can vary meaningfully between brokers, which is why choosing a well-regulated broker matters enormously in forex compared to, say, trading stocks on a major national exchange where pricing is standardized. Leverage in forex is often the highest of any retail-accessible asset class, with some brokers (particularly outside the US) offering 50:1, 100:1, or even higher leverage ratios, which can produce enormous swings in account equity from relatively small currency moves.

The economic drivers of currency prices are also distinct from those of individual stocks: interest rate differentials between countries, trade balances, geopolitical stability, and central bank interventions all play outsized roles, meaning a forex trader needs a working understanding of macroeconomics in a way a pure stock or crypto trader might not. Currency pairs are also inherently relative; you are never simply betting that a currency will 'go up', you are betting it will strengthen relative to a specific other currency, which requires thinking about two economies simultaneously rather than one.

04Crypto: 24/7 markets with unique custody risk

Cryptocurrency markets trade digital assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum on centralized exchanges (such as Coinbase or Binance) and decentralized exchanges running on blockchain protocols. The defining structural feature of crypto markets is that they never close: trading occurs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with no weekend pause and no overnight halt, which is both a major draw for traders who want constant access and a serious risk, since volatility events can occur at any hour with no circuit breakers in many venues.

Crypto also introduces a risk category that barely exists in traditional markets: custody risk. When you buy a stock through a regulated broker, that broker is subject to strict regulatory requirements around segregating and safeguarding client assets. When you hold cryptocurrency on a centralized exchange, you are trusting that exchange's solvency and security practices, and history has repeatedly shown that exchanges can and do fail, freeze withdrawals, or be hacked, sometimes resulting in total loss of customer funds (the collapse of FTX in 2022 being the most prominent recent example). This has given rise to the mantra 'not your keys, not your coins', referring to the practice of moving crypto off exchanges into self-custodied wallets to eliminate counterparty risk, at the cost of taking on personal responsibility for securing private keys.

Crypto markets are also younger, less regulated, and generally far more volatile than traditional asset classes, with daily price swings of 5-10% being unremarkable for even large-cap tokens, and far larger swings common in smaller tokens. This volatility, combined with 24/7 trading and the relative ease of creating new tokens, has produced both legitimate innovation and an enormous amount of outright speculation and fraud, a topic explored in depth in the next lesson on memecoins and speculation risk.

05Comparing leverage, hours and risk side by side

Bringing these four asset classes together, the practical differences that matter most to a new trader are leverage, trading hours, and the nature of the underlying risk being taken. Stocks offer modest leverage (or none, in a cash account), regular trading hours, and ownership-based risk tied to company fundamentals. Futures offer high leverage via margin as a performance bond, near-continuous trading hours for many contracts, and expiry dates that force active position management. Forex offers very high leverage, continuous weekday trading, and macroeconomic, relative-currency risk. Crypto offers variable but often high leverage on derivative products, true 24/7 trading with no closure, and both market risk and custody risk layered on top of each other.

None of these asset classes is inherently 'better' than another; they are different tools suited to different strategies, account sizes, and risk appetites. A trader with a small account and low risk tolerance might reasonably start with fractional shares of stock, where the downside is capped at the amount invested and leverage is minimal. A trader who wants exposure to broad index moves with capital efficiency might use futures, understanding the higher leverage cuts both ways. What matters is that the choice of asset class is deliberate, made with an understanding of that market's mechanics, rather than accidental, driven purely by which app happened to be easiest to download.

Worked example

Comparing leverage across two accounts

A trader has $5,000 and wants $50,000 of market exposure. They compare using a stock margin account versus one E-mini S&P 500 futures contract equivalent exposure via a micro futures contract.

Why it matters: Leverage is a tool for capital efficiency, not a free source of extra profit; higher leverage always means a smaller adverse move wipes out a larger share of your account.

Custody risk in practice

A trader holds $10,000 of Bitcoin on a centralized crypto exchange versus $10,000 of Apple stock at a regulated brokerage.
